Darfur: Will the Genocide Ever End…

The UN Refugee Agency in Chad reported that around 12,000 refugees have fled Darfur into Chad over the weekend, escaping air strikes by the Sudanese Military. Reports of attacks in three border towns on Friday is what prompted the exodus. According to the incoming refugees who are mostly men, say to expect thousands of women and children following behind.

The situation has worsened lately, since a rebel attack that happened in the capital of Chad, Sudan’s neighbor. The Chad government is accusing the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of backing the rebels in Chad. Reason being that the Arab dominated government of Sudan is trying to keep the UN Peacekeeping Force from setting up in the Chad/Sudan border where there are currently 400,000 Sudanese refugees.

The military attacks on civilians continue despite UN resolutions that were supposed to prohibit air strikes over the region. Reports of looting and burned villages, attacks by men on horses and camels, ring similar to previous attacks by allied janjaweed militias, which are the ones accused of some of the worst atrocities against ethnic Africans.

Political settlement to the conflict in Darfur is nowhere closer now then it was a year ago. Even with the UN now joining forces with the African Union to share in the peacekeeping effort, and the condemnation of such attacks by the Secretary-General of the UN Ban Ki-moon the situation continues to be very volatile.

With the Sudanese refugees fleeing into Chad and the tens of thousand Chadian refugees fleeing into the Sudan, there seems nowhere safe for these people to run…

What is the answer…
