Drug Addiction and Recovery
According to Wikipedia, Drug Addiction is described as “the progression of acute drug use to the development of drug-seeking behavior, the vulnerability to relapse, and the decreased, slowed ability to respond to naturally rewarding stimuli.
I don’t think there is anyone out there whose life has not been touched in one form or another by Drug addiction. We see it very prevalent in Hollywood and among celebrities, because they are very much in the public eye. But what we don’t realize is that it is very prevalent in regular society. If you look at the Drug Addiction Statistics put out by places like the Mayo Clinic you’ll find numbers like:
- 19.5 million people over the age of 12 use illegal drugs in the United States (Mayo Clinic)
- The number of persons with drug addiction problems increased from 14.5 million (6.5 percent of the population) in 2000 to 16.6 million (7.3%) in 2001.
- 19,000 deaths occurred from drug addiction in the US (Mayo Clinic)
When you realize that drug addiction is an epidemic, you see the importance of intervention and rehabilitation. The effect that an addiction has on the person, the immediate family, and society in general is disastrous. And so it is important that everyone get involved in the lives of addicted family members, friends or co-workers, so that we may help them achieve rehabilitation.

Addiction is so hard to explain and define. I have done a lot of reading about what it means to be addicted and have found it more important personally to just focus on what I can do for my recovery. I think some people can use drugs heavily and not actually be an addict. One of the most important things in my opinion is for an addict to know that they are not alone. It is important for me for other addicts to relate with me and vice versa.
