Google.org: The Socially Responsible Entrepreneur…
Google has been a rogue from the beginning. Taking online marketing to a new frontier, and now taking Corporate Philanthropy to a new high. If you go on Google.org, you will find that ” they aspire to use the the power of information and technology to address the global challenges of our age: climate change, poverty and emerging disease.” They are at the head of a new trend of “Social Entrepreneurship” by making social investments which attack the core of today’s social problems instead of just attacking the symptoms. Since 2005 Google has pledged to spend $175 million over the following 3 years.
On Thursday Google announced more than $25M to go towards their “Core Initiatives to Combat Climate Change, Poverty and Emerging Threats”.
Here’s a list of their initiatives :
Predict and prevent: Google is partnering with countries around the world to put in early warning systems and develop local capabilities to handle the sudden outset of wide spreading infectious diseases, drought and other environmental disasters.
Inform and Empower to Improve Public Services: They are working to improve Public Services for the developing world, such as education, health, sanitation and water for the poorest members of society.
Fuel the Growth of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: by providing the capital and the tools for SME’s in the developing world to survive long enough to succeed and provide economic growth and Job creating for their local economies.
Develop Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal: The initiative known as RE<C launched in November of 2007, sets out to produce one gigawatt of renewable energy that is cheaper than coal, and they want to do it in years not decades. They intend to focus on advanced solar thermal power, wind power, enhanced geothermal systems, and other potential breakthrough technologies.
Accelerate the Commercialization of Plug-In Vehicle: RechargeIt is the plan to speed up the use of Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles and Vehicle to Grid Technologies.
Not bad for a behemoth…

This is a good recap of Google’s more promising initiatives. I was especially encouraged to read about their plans to make significant investments into alternative energy. Hopefully, this will accelerate the process by which renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power can become more feasible and less expensive for average consumers.
