Myanmar Military Crackdown Quells Protests

29 September 2007

On the third day of the Myanmar military crackdown on protests, the streets are virtually empty. Proof that the crackdown is working. The few brave protesters that were still in the streets on Friday were quickly spooked away by tear gas and warning shots.

After sealing off Monasteries, shutting off the Internet to the whole country, killing and beating up countless protesters, the Military has achieved their goal of quelling the protests. All is quiet on Saturday morning.

It must be disheartening to the people of Burma, to once again have to go back to life as it was, after what seemed like a strong movement to get rid of 45 years of military control. With the Monks under house arrest, the heart and hope of the protests is weakened.

Hundreds have been arrested including many outspoken advocates of democracy. According to the Military Government only 10 protesters have been killed, including one Japanese Journalist. But it is widely feared that those estimates are gravely understated, based on witness reports.

The Myanmar government doesn’t want the world to know what is really going on in their country. On Thursday they took over the building that housed the main server to the Internet for Burma and shut it down. For those who have access and blogged from Burma about the unrest, there is now fear that they may be tracked down, for there is a law in Burma the requires anyone that has a camera, computer or satellite disk to have a licence or go to jail for 7 years. They are also preventing Journalists from openly entering Yangon.

Although the world is in an uproar over the repression of demonstrators in Burma, few think anything will change. Sanctions and Global criticism did not work in 1988 when 3000 demonstrators were killed and probably will not work now. It is apparent that the military junta does not care what the world thinks of it goings on, and will fight for the life of their repressive government tooth and nail, without remorse.

It’s hard to fight bullets with flesh. As for the people of Burma, they will have to hold on until the world decides that enough is enough, and helps them fight back.
