Peru’s Fujimori Soap Opera Continue’s

21 October 2007

178px-oas-fujimori-crop.jpgPeru’s former president and Political escapee, has been formally charged with murder, kidnapping, bribery, wire tapping, and misuse of government funds. Bringing his self-imposed exile to an end in search of further Political aspirations, is what may have been Fujimori’s downfall.

In October, 2005 after stating that he would run in the April, 2006 elections, his daughter threw his name in the bucket, and he flew to Chile knowing full well that he would be extradited to Peru. He was detained by the Chileans from November, 2005 to April 2006. Then was release on the promise that he would remain in the country while extradition was being worked. The extradition process was begun in January of 2006, later rejected by the Chilean’s in July of 2007, appealed by the Peruvian government then accepted on September, 21 2007.

A three judge panel will oversee the charges of murder and kidnapping for the massacre of 15 people including one 8 year old boy back in 1991. Fujimori is accused of authorizing Montecinos, his then Intelligence Chief to organize the Colina Group, a military intelligence unit dedicated to assassinating suspected rebel collaborators, mostly the Maoist group named The Shining Path and any other groups deemed political opponents.

Fujimori’s mistake was to underestimate the gravity of the charges that would be brought against him, he calculated that he would be charged with lesser crimes that he could beat and return to politics. If convicted he could face 30 years, which at 69 would be a death penalty.
