Russia’s Ex-KGB Man and Venezuela’s Wannabe Commie Run Elections In Unison…
Both Russia’s Ex-KGB’s Putin and “wannabe Commie” Hugo Chavez are looking to change the world. Both the Russian Parliamentary Elections and Venezuela’s Referendum campaign to make 69 changes to it’s constitution, are being held on Sunday. As if in Unison, both Putin and Chavez are looking to make themselves Presidents for life. Both presidents seem to be trying to take their countries in the direction of dictatorships with a slant towards communism.
Putin and his “United Russia” party is expected to sweep the elections, largely due to a bombardment of propaganda from their party. “Everyone is sick of it, United Russia is everywhere: in your mail box, on TV, on the radio.” Watchdog organizations are concerned about reports that voters are being pressured by authorities to vote at the workplace where they can be watched by their bosses, and even Universities have scheduled classes on Sunday to make sure that students show up to vote. Reports of confiscation of opposition leaflets and biased TV coverage, don’t help the image that these elections do not fall under democratic standards. Furthermore the OSCE, Europe’s main election monitoring body, has decided not to attend the elections due to the many restrictions imposed by the Kremlin.
Opposition leader Gary Kasparov, Russia’s former chess champion has made a bid for the presidential Election, and was arrested Friday and sentenced to 5 days in jail for allegedly organizing unsanctioned protest, resisting arrest and chanting anti-government slogans. See Video Of Arrest. “At least a third, maybe more of the Russian electorate don’t have any political force that they support and that already makes the elections a farce,” said Kasparov.
Putin has vowed to stay strong in Politics if the vote on Sunday goes the way of the United Russia. The constitution bars Putin from running a third term in the March Elections, but a strong vote for the United Russia may make a way for Putin to get back in the helm. Should United Russia win Sunday’s elections, it would take Russia one step closer to becoming a one party state, again.
Putin has been fortunate, to have such high oil prices supporting his regime, by parallel so is Chavez. Both men are using the benefits of high oil prices as their trump card to wield their power against the democracies of the world. Both men threatening to cut of supplies to the west. The latest threat coming from Chavez on Friday, to the US, threatening to cut off oil supplies if the US if they question the results of the vote.
Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez’s tactics to make to make sure that the referendum passes, is not much different than the tactics of Russia’s Putin. Reminiscent of Russia’s Communist era, tens of thousands of supposed supporters were bused in for a rally in support of Chavez’s referendum, countering an opposition rally to the 69 constitutional changes which people fear would undermine democratic freedoms and institutionalize socialism. His communistic rhetoric, calling his Venezuelan opponents, Imperialist peons, and the US , “The North American Empire”, is all over his speeches to his supporters. Chavez has threatened to Nationalize Spanish Banks unless the Spanish King apologizes for telling him to shut up. But also evident in his rhetoric is his intent to control the freedoms of his people. He has threatened to take independent Globovision off the air, if they broadcast partial results. International Channels, especially CNN are under a warning to be kicked out of the country if they report what he doesn’t like. Protesters against the referendum are met with force. The UN is concerned his changes to the constitution threaten free speech and other civil rights.
If this referendum passes on Sunday, it would eliminate the current term limits allowing Chavez to run for President for life, but also would give him full authority over the now autonomous Central Bank, allowing him to dictate economic policy, which he wants to take away from a market economy and towards socialism. The voting age would be changed from 18 to 16. Funding of Political parties by the government would be allowed. Summary of changes to the constitution. History seems to be repeating itself , and people fall for it over and over again. Going back to my previous article about mankind not learning from its mistakes, Russia and Venezuela’s situations right now are perfect examples of that, wouldn’t you agree?
