Who will win the Nobel Peace Prize for Health Care Reform

12 October 2007

Today Al Gore and the United Nations Climate Panel (IPCC) won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for Global Warming . Who will win the Nobel Peace Prize on Health Care Reform?

I’m waiting for the good soul who will come up with the solution to the world wide problem of health care, and win the Nobel Peace Prize for that. I’m a hopeful that one day, someone will realize that health care is one of those inalienable rights or natural rights of all human beings, and not just a way for “some” to make money.

I am hoping that one day, the powers that be, the governments, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and research companies realize that the health of it’s population is more important than the right of any company to make a profit on the backs of the sick.

If you look up Health Reform in Wikipedia.org it says that: “The United States is in a unique position with regard to health care, being the clear world leader in medical innovation, while at the same time leaving the free market to deliver most health services. For example, researchers in the US earn The Nobel Prize in medicine approximately twice as often as researchers in the rest of the world combined, and research dollars dwarf those of any other nation, including the EU. As a result, the medicines and medical technology developed in the US not only benefit US citizens, but spread broadly into health care systems of other nations, relieving the rest of the world a substantial burden in research.” And yet, “The United States government provides health care to just over 25% of it’s citizens through various agencies, but otherwise does not employ a system. The free market provides the balance of health care services generally centered around modestly regulated private insurance methods.” Very modestly regulated. While I am not one for much regulation, this is an area where the government has to take charge and take care of it’s citizens. Sadly instead of using this medical innovation to take care of our citizens, we use it to make the Medical Industry rich.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation:

Health Care Spending in the United States and OECD Countries
January 2007

Health spending is rising faster than incomes in most developed countries, which raises questions about how these countries will pay for future health care needs. The issue may be particularly acute in the United States, which not only spends much more per capita on health care than any other country, but which also has had one of the fastest growth rates in health spending among developed countries. Despite this higher level of spending, the United States does not achieve better outcomes on many important health measures.

In other words we spend more and more and things are not getting better. When will this change? When will people replace money as a priority in Health Care? Where is that brave soul that will champion this cause and win that Nobel Peace Prize against all odds.

When will Health Care stop being a privilege and become a human right.
